Phoenix 200 Ratcheting Noise

Some of the slip clutches (Spike Load Damper) that protect the transmission are set loose at the factory. You could add one more shim to the spring washer pack or if you're really courageous, you could add two. Remember, the slip clutch is there to protect the transmission. Too many shims could break it.

Phoenix Spike Limiter Removal and Installation

1. Remove LH footwell and support located beneath footwell.
2. Remove LH side cover by removing one Phillips screw and two plastic rivets.
3. Loosen CVT inlet and outlet clamps.
4. Remove the two CVT outlet duct retaining bolts to facilitate CVT cover removal.
5. Remove the eight CVT cover retaining bolts and CVT cover from ATV.
6. Remove set screw from nut on secondary clutch.
7. Remove secondary clutch nut and install one extra 1 mm flat washer, Polaris Part #0452440, as shown in Figure 1. This brings the total 1 mm flat washer count to three, increasing the spring force and reducing spike limiter engagement frequency. Figure 2 shows a photo of the spike limiter components.

8. Apply 272 Loctite to retaining nut threads, reinstall nut, torque to 60 ft-lb, and reinstall set screw.
9. Reinstall CVT cover. Torque retaining bolts to 10 ft-lb.
10. Reinstall CVT inlet and outlet ducts and tighten clamps.
11. Reinstall CVT outlet duct retaining bolts and torque to 10 ft-lb.
12. Reinstall LH side cover.
13. Reinstall LH footwell support and footwell.
