Belt Freeplay

To check belt freeplay, place a straight edge on top of the belt over both clutches. At a point, 1/2 way between the clutches, push down on the belt to remove any slack. Measure the distance between the belt and the straight edge. The distance should be 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" for best performance. If it is not correct, you must shim or adjust the transmission clutch.

MOTOR CLUTCH BELT SIDE CLEARANCE

The best clearance on the motor clutch should be .020" with a new belt. With the belt installed, push down on belt to remove freeplay, and measure side clearance with a feeler gauge.
To adjust this clearance, you can use a washer shim on the clutch bolt end or by disassembling the spider and shimming or machining the shaft shoulder.

On our race machines, we machine .080" off the shoulder of the clutch shaft and then machine .080" off the threaded inside edge of the spider. We then assemble the clutch and adjust shims to get the .020" belt clearance. X's MUST line up on the clutch. Special tools and equipment are required to do this work, NOT FOR THE NOVICE.
